Love on a Rooftop

You are now looking at one of the most famous views in the world - San Francisco Bay.  You are now looking at, well if you have to be told you are too young to be watching this show.  We are staying with this view because, well, who needs a reason?  Besides this is the girl in our story and I think it's time you met the rest of her. Her name is Julie, she is 21 years old and she is just about to fall in love.  This is the boy in our story.  He's an apprentice architect.  At this point he doesn't know that his entire life plan is about to be changed by a liverwurst on pumpernickel sandwich.
"Hey, Hey."
Don't worry - he'll find it.

"Hey, hey.  Excuse me, you have my lunch "
"I beg your pardon"
"My lunch, you have it"
"Well, it's original"
Well that takes care of the boy meets girl department.  Now anyone who has ever seen a love story knows that the next step is boy loves girl but since you've seen it all before, we'll just show you the highlights.
"I love you"
"I love you"
"I love you"
Well, when you're that much in love you don't have to be a great conversationalist.  Of course, it was inevitable that all this would lead to a proposal.
"Dave, when are we going to get married?"
"Look Julie, I love you and I want to marry you, but I'm an apprentice architect and you're an art student."
"Are you trying to tell me that mixed marriages never work?"
"Well I make $85.37 a week.  I'm just starting on my career and so are you. We've only known each other five days.  Your parents haven't even met me.  We are emotionally not ready for marriage and I make $85.37 a week."
"You sound like you made a list"
"What's wrong with being organised?"
"You did make a list"
"Look Julie, I don't think there's anything that ... hey Julie, I don't think these people are interested in hearing our problems"
"Are you kidding, we're fascinated"
"Julie, we will examine the problem later"
"Examine the problem?  You make it sound like   You know the trouble with you?  You've no adventure in your soul.  You're stodgy."
"Well then why did you propose?"
"Oh I'm sorry, and it won't happen again"
"Please marry me Dave, even if you don't love me, just think of the baby"
"She was only kidding"
So much for boy loses girl.  The boy dealt with the problem in his own fashion.  He immersed himself in his work.  It was no good.  There was too much against them. It just wouldn't work.  Marriage?  Impossible.
And so they were married and set out to prove that it was possible to live on love alone.  Well, almost.
Since Dave was already sensitive about their lack of finances, Julie didn't tell him about her parents being wealthy.  It might create complications.  They both agreed on the sort of place they wanted to live in.  Cheap, practical, charming cheap.  Something with atmosphere, with a view.  And cheap.  It was Julie who found just the place they were looking for.
"Well?"
"It's very interesting"
"Oh, it's divine. I knew you'd love it. I know it looks a little bare right now but just think what we can do with it.  I mean it's got such atmosphere and charm.  Well it's got atmosphere.  Oh darling, don't you just love it?
"There's no windows"
"I know, it used to be a store room.  Now the kitchen will be here and I'll put up a colourful screen and then I'll make some real cute curtains. Oh darling, it'll be great"
"It has no windows"
"You can find fault with any place if you are going to be hyper-critical"
"It has no windows"
"Will you stop being so conventional?  Is there some kind of law that says you have to have a window?"
"Well...  Yes, as a matter of fact there is."
"Well, we don't need them.  The people in the pyramids didn't"
"Honey, the people in the pyramids were dead"
"I can't argue with you if you're going to split hairs"
"Darling, I tell you what, let's not talk about it any more. You just take a look at the rest of the place and if you don't like it, we won't take it. OK?"
"You really mean that?"
"Sure"
"OK"
"It shouldn't be too hard to break the lease I signed!"

Now this is where most stories end, but for us it's only the beginning.

Love on a Rooftop was a 30 minute sit com which ran from September 1966 to April 1967 - unfortunately it was not renewed for a second season.  It was Pete's first co-starring role in a series and his co-star was the British actress Judy Carne. It was produced in colour by Screen Gems Television which was a division of Columbia Pictures Inc and was broadcast on the ABC network.  There were a total of 30 episodes.
